Qualification

  • Geologist Gr 'A'/Assistant Geologist Gr 'B' (GSI): Master’s degree in Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science and Resource Management or Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Geochemistry from a recognized University.
  • Geophysicist Gr 'A'/Scientist 'B' (Geophysics)/Assistant Geophysicist Gr 'B': M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics or Geophysics or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics) or Applied Geophysics or Marine Geophysics or M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) from a recognized University.
  • Chemist Gr 'A'/Scientist 'B' (Chemical)/Assistant Chemist Gr 'B': M.Sc./Integrated M.Sc. in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry (or Physical/Inorganic/Organic/Hydro-Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry for Assistant Chemist) from a recognized University.
  • Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologist Gr 'B' (CGWB): Master’s degree in Geology or Applied Geology or Marine Geology or Hydrogeology from a recognized University.

Age Limit

Age Limit as on 1 January 2027:

Candidates must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years as on 1st January 2027 (i.e., born not earlier than 2nd January 1995 and not later than 1st January 2006).

Stage-I Structure Paper-I: GS (100 Marks + Paper-II: Stream Specific (300 Marks)
Stage-II Structure 3 Stream Specific Papers (200 Marks each, 3 Hours each)
Negative Marking (Stage-I) 1/3rd (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question deducted for wrong answer

Preliminary Exam Syllabus (Stage-I)

  • Paper-I (General Studies - Common for all streams): Current events of national and international importance, History of India and Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change, General Science.
  • Paper-II (Stream-Specific Subject): Objective questions based on the opted discipline — Geology/Hydrogeology, Geophysics, or Chemistry.

How to Apply

  • Visit the official portal UPSC Online Application Portal (upsconline.nic.in).
  • Complete the Universal Registration Number (URN) module if not already registered.
  • Fill out the Common Application Form (CAF) and provide the required identity details.
  • Upload candidate photograph, complete live photo capture, and upload the signature image (signed three times vertically with black ink).
  • Proceed to the Examination Specific Module for Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2027.
  • Pay the application fee online (if applicable).
  • Select your preferred exam centre and submit the final application before 22 September 2026 (6:00 PM).
  • Download and print the submitted confirmation form for future correspondence.
